Vitamin D Deficiency Linked to Nighttime Snoring, Study Finds

Tuesday - 09/09/2025 10:00
A recent study reveals a potential link between low vitamin D levels and snoring in adults. Individuals with vitamin D deficiency were almost twice as likely to snore, suggesting a connection beyond bone health. Maintaining adequate vitamin D through diet, sunlight, or supplements may improve sleep quality and overall well-being by potentially reducing airway inflammation and muscle weakness.
This vitamin deficiency could be the reason behind your nighttime snoring
Nighttime snoring is more than just an annoying habit. It can sometimes indicate an underlying health issue, including low vitamin D levels. A study published on NIH’s PubMed Central examined 238 adults and measured their vitamin D status, finding that people with low vitamin D were almost twice as likely to snore compared to those with normal levels. Vitamin D is well known for supporting bone health, strong teeth, and a healthy immune system, but this study highlights another important benefit: it may help reduce snoring. Maintaining adequate vitamin D levels through diet, supplements, or sunlight exposure could not only improve sleep quality but also support overall health and well-being, particularly as we get older and our bodies change.

How vitamin D deficiency is linked to snoring

The study included 238 adults, with 98 snorers and 140 non-snorers. Blood tests showed that snorers had lower vitamin D levels, with a median of 14.0 ng/ml compared to 15.6 ng/ml in non-snorers. About 75% of snorers had vitamin D deficiency (≤20 ng/ml), while only 61% of non-snorers did. This shows a clear connection between low vitamin D and snoring.
Easy ways to increase your Vitamin D intake
The analysis showed that having low vitamin D almost doubled the chances of snoring, even when other factors like age, sex, weight, education, and smoking were taken into account.
This suggests that vitamin D deficiency could be a direct factor in causing snoring.

Do you think low vitamin D levels could be a contributing factor to snoring?

Why low vitamin D may cause snoring

Vitamin D deficiency might increase snoring by:
  • Causing inflammation in the throat and airway.
  • Weakening the muscles that keep your airway open.
  • Affecting the immune system and sleep quality.

What you can do

Even though the study does not prove that low vitamin D directly causes snoring, keeping vitamin D levels healthy may help. You can:
  • Eat vitamin D-rich foods like eggs, fish, and fortified milk.
  • Spend some time in the sunlight every day.
  • Consider vitamin D supplements if recommended by your doctor.
