Xabi Alonso’s first month in charge of Real Madrid has already earned him silverware—this time on the sidelines. The Spanish tactician was crowned La Liga’s Manager of the Month for August after guiding Los Blancos to a perfect start in his debut campaign.
Alonso, who took charge after Carlo Ancelotti’s departure earlier this summer, wasted no time stamping his authority on Real Madrid. Despite a shortened pre-season, the team opened their La Liga campaign with three straight wins against Osasuna, Real Oviedo, and RCD Mallorca. Across those games, they netted six times and allowed only a single goal, a reflection of the defensive discipline and attacking fluidity Alonso has already brought to the squad.
One of the biggest talking points of his early reign has been the seamless integration of teenage talent Arda Guler. The young Turkish midfielder has provided an attack-minded spark at a time when Madrid are navigating life without Luka Modric. Filling the void left by a modern great is no small task, but Alonso’s trust in youth has already begun to reshape Madrid’s midfield identity.
What has impressed many is not just the results, but the speed at which Alonso’s tactical vision has been embraced in the dressing room. That clarity of approach helped him edge out strong contenders such as Athletic Club’s Ernesto Valverde and Espanyol’s Manolo Gonzalez, both of whom also oversaw encouraging starts to the season.
Elsewhere, Barcelona’s new coach Hansi Flick has also made a steady beginning. The Catalans have picked up seven points from their first three matches—winning twice and drawing once against Rayo Vallecano. While it hasn’t been flawless, Flick’s opening month has given fans a glimpse of his restructuring process at Camp Nou.
For Madrid supporters, the optimism extends beyond statistics. Alonso has introduced a sharper, more dynamic rhythm in possession while tightening things at the back—a blend that has placed the team at the top of the league table, two points clear of Barcelona.
The challenge now grows steeper. After the international break, Madrid will return to face Real Sociedad in La Liga before shifting focus to their Champions League opener against Marseille. For Alonso, though, August has been the perfect statement: his era at the Bernabeu has begun with promise and plaudits in equal measure.
