Ben Stokes, the captain of the England cricket team, has lauded the outstanding performance of openers Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley following their remarkable run chase against India at Headingley. The duo's 188-run partnership set the stage for England's successful pursuit of a 371-run target in the fourth innings.
While Duckett grabbed headlines with his stunning 149, Stokes emphasized the crucial role of Crawley's 65. He highlighted Crawley's ability to create a disruptive and complementary presence at the top of the order, which proved vital in the victory.
"Chasing 370, a strong start is essential. Minimizing early wickets is crucial, and the way Zak approached it with Ben, dictating the game at the top, was particularly significant," Stokes commented.
He further added, "Zak's contribution was immense. Their complementary styles – left hand, right hand, one tall, one not – make it incredibly difficult for bowlers to settle. When they get going, it's hard to find a rhythm. I'm sure the opposition would agree it's a nightmare when they're in for a long period. Ben scored 149, but Zak's 65 was equally important. He understood the situation, allowing Ben to apply pressure. This opening partnership has been exceptional for us over the past few years."
Duckett's dominance against Ravindra Jadeja on the final day, especially his fearless reverse sweeps, caught the eye. Stokes lauded him as one of the best players of spin in the world, especially complimenting his use of the reverse sweep. "Ben is one of the best in the world at doing reverse sweeps and he's a fantastic player of spin, in particular on really tricky surfaces," Stokes stated.
Stokes even sought advice from Duckett mid-innings to improve his own options against spin. "I had a word with him about how I could give myself a better chance. I wanted to either get forward or get back and manipulate on the leg side."
He continued, "I decided to play with a clear game and reverse sweeps. It's a difficult condition, but I was confident in what I needed to do."
This victory marks the sixth time under Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum that England has successfully chased a target of 250 or more in the fourth innings. Stokes attributes their success to their simple and relaxed approach.
"We are a simple-minded pair. Cricket is about scoring one more run than the opposition. We try to keep everything simple and calm," Stokes explained.
"The atmosphere in the dressing room during such chases is important. The lads have jobs to do, and maintaining a calm, relaxed vibe is crucial for their mindset when they're out there facing pressure."
Stokes concluded, "The plan was simple. If we bat the overs that are left in this game, we will win this game just because of how quick this ground is at scoring. This is a very, very quick scoring ground."
