Chelsea have officially confirmed the signing of Alejandro Garnacho from Manchester United on a long-term deal, making him their ninth arrival of the ongoing summer transfer window. The 20-year-old winger ends his journey at Old Trafford, where he came through the youth academy and became one of United’s most exciting young talents.
The move sees Garnacho join a rare list of players who have represented both Chelsea and Manchester United. Legendary Argentine midfielder Juan Sebastin Veron, Radamel Falcao, Mason Mount, Nemanja Matic, and Juan Mata are amongst those who previously made the same switch.
Garnacho broke into United’s senior team in 2022, coincidentally making his debut against Chelsea, and has since established himself as a regular. Last season, he featured in 58 games across competitions, scoring 11 goals and providing 10 assists. In total, he leaves United with 48 goal contributions from 144 appearances, along with winners’ medals from the EFL Cup and FA Cup under Erik ten Hag.
Speaking after signing, Garnacho expressed his excitement: “It’s an incredible moment for my family and me to join this great club. I can’t wait to get started. I watched the Club World Cup, and to join the world champions is special – we’re the best team in the world! It’s amazing to be here and I’m very happy.”
United, meanwhile, are left with a major gap in attack following his departure. Their season has already started poorly with a loss to Arsenal, a draw against Fulham, and an embarrassing League Cup exit to fourth-division side Grimsby Town. A narrow win against Burnley has slightly eased pressure, but reinforcements are now a necessity if they are to compete in the Premier League and in Europe.
For Chelsea, Garnacho represents not only young attacking talent but also a statement signing from their historic rivals. His arrival adds depth and competition to Enzo Maresca's frontline as the Blues push to defend their world champion status.
