Alcaraz Dethrones Sinner at US Open, Reclaims World No. 1 Ranking

Carlos Alcaraz has reclaimed the World No.1 ranking after lifting the US Open 2025 title. On Sunday, September 7, the Spaniard took two hours and 42 minutes to defeat Jannik Sinner 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 in front of a packed Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Sinner had climbed to the top of the rankings last year after Novak Djokovic withdrew from the French Open 2024 quarterfinals with a knee injury. The Italian stayed at No.1 for 65 weeks before Alcaraz dethroned him.

US Open 2025 Final Highlights

For Alcaraz, this marks his first return to the summit since September 2023. He initially rose to World No.1 in 2022 after beating Casper Ruud in the US Open final, becoming the first teenager in history to claim the top spot.

“To my team and my family, I feel truly lucky to have you. Honestly, it’s an honor. The hard work you put in helps me improve not just as a player but also as a person.

“I’m really proud of the people I have around me, and every achievement I’ve had is because of you—this one belongs to you as well,” Alcaraz said in the on-court interview.

“I’m especially grateful to have part of my family here—my brother, uncle, father, and mother—with my little brothers watching from home. The support I receive from all of you means so much. Thank you,” Alcaraz added.

Alcaraz dominates Sinner

Alcaraz stormed past Sinner in New York, turning what many expected to be another classic into a lopsided contest. The Spaniard overpowered and outclassed his rival, a stark departure from their two previous finals this year — the five-hour-and-29-minute epic at Roland Garros and the evenly poised showdown at Wimbledon.

With this victory, Alcaraz captured his second US Open title, placing himself among a rare group of players to have lifted Grand Slam trophies on all three surfaces. He now owns two crowns each at the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open, with only the Australian Open eluding him.

For Sinner, the defeat was doubly painful. It snapped his 27-match winning streak in hard-court majors and denied him the chance to become the first man since Roger Federer in 2008 to defend the US Open crown.
